There Are Three Types of Samples, and Each Serves a Different Purpose
A digital proof is a PDF or 3D render showing layout and color approximation — cost: $0, turnaround: 24–48 hours. A structural blank sample is a plain unprinted box in your exact dimensions, used to verify size and assembly — cost: $30–$60, turnaround: 3–5 business days. A fully printed pre-production sample replicates the final product with your artwork, chosen materials, and finishes — cost: $60–$150, turnaround: 5–7 business days. Only the third type confirms color accuracy, finish quality, and structural integrity simultaneously.
The Sample Fee Covers Plate-Making and Manual Assembly, Not Just Materials
The $60–$150 sample fee is not a material charge. It covers the cost of producing short-run printing plates ($40–$80), manual cutting and assembly outside the automated production line ($15–$40 labor), and courier shipping to your address ($10–$30 depending on destination). These costs do not scale down for a single unit because the setup is identical to a full run. Factories that quote sample fees below $40 are typically providing unprinted or digitally printed blanks, not offset-printed production samples.
Sample Fees Are Credited Against the Bulk Order at Most Factories
Approximately 70–80% of mid-to-large custom packaging factories credit the sample fee in full against the first production order, provided the order meets the factory's minimum order quantity (MOQ). The credit applies automatically on orders above 500 units at most facilities. For orders below MOQ, the sample fee is usually non-refundable. Confirm the credit policy in writing before paying the sample invoice — specifically whether the credit applies to the factory price (EXW) or the total invoice including freight.
Four Specific Elements to Inspect When the Sample Arrives
First, measure all three assembled dimensions with a caliper and confirm they are within ±1 mm of your spec sheet. Second, compare printed colors against your approved Pantone references under a D50 or D65 standard illuminant; acceptable delta E is typically ≤3.0. Third, open and close the lid or closure mechanism 10 times and check for delamination, cracking, or misalignment. Fourth, verify that the finish (e.g., soft-touch lamination, foil stamp) is applied to the correct areas and matches the approved artwork file at 100% opacity.
Each Revision Round After the First Sample Adds Cost and Lead Time
If the first sample requires changes — to color, dimensions, or finish placement — a second sample is required. Most factories charge 50–100% of the original sample fee for a revised sample, as new plates or tooling adjustments are needed. A second sample adds another 4–6 business days. Budget for a maximum of two sample rounds in your project timeline. More than two rounds usually indicate an upstream issue with the artwork file or an unclear specification sheet that should be resolved before re-sampling.
A Pre-Production Sample Can Be Skipped Only Under Specific Conditions
Skipping the sample is acceptable when: (1) you are reordering an identical spec with the same factory, and the previous production run had zero defects; (2) the factory has produced a verified reference sample within the past 6 months using the same materials and plates; or (3) the order quantity is below 300 units and the product does not require tight dimensional tolerances. For all other scenarios — especially first-time orders, new finishes, or quantities above 1,000 units — a pre-production sample is the lowest-cost method of quality assurance available.
Sample Type Cost and Lead Time Reference
